MARIEM VALDEZ

Dramatic energy, movement, a kind of personal calligraphic symbolism and dark power infuse the paintings of Mariem Valdez. The works seem to defy, not only the paper on which they’re done, but any conventional or predescribed style. They have a certain wildness and yet are controlled. The dark power is harnessed and somehow invites the observer to look long at the paintings/drawings and in them to discover something about himself. Although strongly graphic in nature, I feel these works are also psychological reflection which the artist shares with her observers. How we respond depends largely on whatever our own experiences may have been, or may be. Yet there is a distinct flowing and movement which is natural and compelling. It conveys and expresses spontaneous feeling and moods which I think we all have.
